The program comes with no lesson plan or curriculum in your native language. You are expected to be able to read in the program language immediately upon receiving your copy. Try that in Thai! The pictures are often confusing as to what they are supposed to be conveying.

Rosetta Stone Thai Level 1 WILL teach you: +Very basic vocabulary. +Very basic grammar. Rosetta Stone Thai Level 1 will NOT teach you: -The Thai alphabet. (Very important) -How to read Thai. (Very important) -How to write Thai. -The tonal structure of Thai. (Perhaps the MOST important thing about the language) -How to determine the tone of a Thai word from written Thai. (VERY important.) -How to say "Hello." -How to say "How are you." -How to say "Where is the toilet?" -How to hold a simple conversation. Indeed, unless you have had some really basic instruction in the Thai language before starting the Rosetta Stone program, it may serve only to confuse you.
If there had been a "Thai Level 2" at some point in the last 10 years, this review may have been a lot different.

Does anyone know when version 3 is coming out in Thai? I returned my version 2, and I hope that version 3 is available by the time I have enough money to buy it! Version 2 was worth using, but when I heard the description of version 3, I thought my money would be better spent on it. Now, if Rosetta Stone makes an offer where I buy version 2, and then they send me version 3 when it comes out, I might do that. Otherwise, if you can wait for version 3, save your money!

Thai is not the easiest language to master, especially from a book. I spend a lot of time traveling in Thailand and needed a way to begin to master the language. I bought Rosetta Stone 4 months before my last trip and studied for about an hour every day. During my last trip I was able to communicate with the locals on a rudimentary level, which made a big difference in acquiring services and just living day to day in the rural area of Thailand. The program is great because it gives you an understanding of the most important feature of learning a language, context. The program is great in helping myself learn to write Thai as well, where as books only give you a phonetic understanding. The program is useful because Thailand is a country that doesn't print signs in English the farther you move away from tourist areas. Thai people also will respect you more if you can speak a little of their language. At first the program can seem overwhelming, but if you are a persistent student, you will find it easy to master the flow of learning in no time. The only thing I would like to see is an English transliteration of the language as well.
